PRESS RELEASE: Referendum Party Notes Dion George Resignation from the DA and Parliament
The Referendum Party (RP) notes the resignation of former minister Dion George from the DA and from Parliament. Mr George has made significant allegations and we trust that the appropriate authorities will assess them. It is not the role of the RP to arbitrate internal disputes within another political party.
What Mr George has articulated, however, reflects what has already been clear to many observers: the DA has exercised very limited influence within the Government of National Unity. Since entering the GNU, the DA has largely failed to shift the direction of government, with ANC policy and control continuing largely unchallenged - occasionally accompanied by strongly worded DA statements that have produced little tangible outcomes.
Whether or not there are individual conflicts involving senior figures in the DA is ultimately beside the point. The core problem lies in the structure of the GNU itself: an arrangement that entrenches ANC dominance while leaving junior partners like the DA unable to meaningfully challenge race-based policy, damaging foreign policy alignments, or the broader policy status quo.
For many DA voters, the outcome has been far removed from what they voted for. While many may have hoped for the success of the GNU in its early days, it is increasingly clear that alternative solutions, rooted in the right to self-determination, are the only way voters can secure outcomes that reflect their choices at the ballot box.
