PRESS RELEASE: RP Condemns Taxi Violence - Calls For Aggressive Enforcement of Law and Order
The Referendum Party (RP) condemns the ongoing wave of taxi violence in the Western Cape, which has already left commuters dead and wounded in Philippi, Khayelitsha, Macassar, and Somerset West.
We welcome the urgent interdict granted by the Western Cape High Court, which prohibits intimidation and interference by the associations on affected routes and compels compliance with the law. This order gives the provincial authorities the tools they need to act decisively - but the interdict must now be matched with firm, visible enforcement.
RP leader Phil Craig says: “The people of the Cape cannot live under siege from violence and intimidation. We welcome the interdict, but enforcement must be swift, uncompromising, and decisive. Commuters must be able to travel without fear. The Cape deserves safety, and law and order must prevail.”
RP calls on the relevant municipal, provincial, and national authorities to use every legal and enforcement mechanism available to restore stability, including suspending or revoking operating licences where associations fail to comply with the law. If the authorities act with firmness and resolve, this crisis can be contained - but hesitation will only embolden the lawless.
